Our courses are run in our training facilities based in the heart of London, with live blood experience based in Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College NHS Foundation Trust Hospitals.
Our phlebotomy courses are consistent with the NHS Skills for Health Occupational Standards - National Occupational Standard for Obtaining Venous Blood Samples, National Patient Saftey Agency (NPSA) and World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
Our adult phlebotomy training course is accredited by OCN Credit for Learning. Students undertaking this course can gain a Level 3 certificate with 10 unit credits. In order to achieve this accreditation, we have to conform to various conditions and ensure that we fully support all learners, taking into consideration the different needs of each individual.
Our phlebotomy trainers have many years of experience in practicing and training other phlebotomists. They will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to become a competent phlebotomist for routine adult patients.
Achieving a Certificate of Competence is usually gained within 8-12 weeks. In order to achieve this we run the course in two parts.
Part one
Part 1 is a day of theory and dry laboratory experience currently held on a Friday, where our experienced trainers will cover all the essential knowledge in phlebotomy that you will require. You will have an opportunity to practise blood taking from training arms.
Part two
Part 2 of the course provides students with a local induction held on a Saturday morning, followed by being booked onto our live patient bleed experience, where you will be supervised (using direct and indirect methods) by our trainers in one our NHS facilities, performing venepuncture on real patients.
Students will have the opportunity to undertake a maximum of 90 hours clinical practice, which is more than any other comparable phlebotomy course currently offers.
On successful completion of both parts 1 and 2, you will undertake a written and practical test. On passing these tests you will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance / Competence. Our courses are open to both novices and experienced healthcare professionals.
As well as mixing a comprehensive theory programme with an unrivalled number of clinical practice hours, our courses are relaxed and good fun. We have expert trainers and a bright, airy and modern facility in central London with good transport links.
But don't just take our word for it, our courses receives praise from the trainee phlebotomists that go on them. We ask students to complete an evaluation form following their training, and this is what they say:
I would like to say thank you on behalf of the whole undergraduate team.
Based on verbal feedback from students, the training again has been of very high standards and they found it very useful.
Thank you for all you support (in or out of the training area).
I never had the opportunity to thank you for all the support and help that I received from you and St Thomas' Hospital. Having the opportunity to undergo the training, despite the obstacles that I initially had when trying to begin my practical training, is something that I will always be grateful for. During my training everyone was so kind, helpful and wanted the best for me, I felt that genuinely and I’m honestly so grateful for them all (especially Paul and Dorothy who really influenced a lot of my progress as a phlebotomist).
On finding out that they had passed their final assessment: I am delighted to know. It's made my year!! Many thanks to everyone on the team who were so patient and helpful.
Seymour, Paul and other staff who supported and encouraged me to gain my certificate. Thank you very much to you all. I'm very grateful.
