PAI-1 4G/5G Promoter Polymorphism

Description:
Direct detection of a single base deletion at nucleotide -675 (4G/5G) in the promoter of the PAI-1 (SERPINE1) gene.
Clinical details:
The presence of the single base deletion (4G/5G or 4G/4G) results in elevated levels of PAI-1 protein which can suppress fibrinolysis. Some studies have associated the 4G allele with an increased risk of thrombosis, MI, fetal loss and pre-eclampsia, although other studies dispute this. It is probable that only homozygosity (4G/4G) has any significance.
