Blood or bone marrow culture for Mycobacteria.
Sample referred to Microbiology at Charing Cross Hospital.
Turn around time 6-10weeks (6 weeks for a negative culture)

Blood for AFB or Bone marrow for AFB - samples are collected in BACTEC™ Myco/F Lytic Culture Vials which are available from Central Specimen Reception at St Thomas's Hospital and at Guys Hospital.
The specimen must be collected using sterile technique to reduce the chance of contamination. The range of blood volume which can be cultured is 1 mL to 5 mL,
with optimum recovery obtained at 3 mL to 5 mL.

Storage and transport:
Place labelled sample in a sealed sample bag and send to Central Specimen Reception (CSR).
