Description:
Samples sent to King's College Hospital (KCH) Liver Unit referral laboratory for quantification of Hepatitis B surface antigen in serum. This is performed only for patients undergoing interferon treatment for Hepatitis B infection. This assay is available routinely Mon to Fri.
Clinical details:
Quantitative Hepatitis B surface antigen levels have been shown to be helpful in predicting the likelihood of a sustained response to interferon therapy. NICE guidance recommends monitoring quantitative surface antigen levels along with hepatitis B DNA levels at the start of interferon treatment and at weeks 12, 24 and 48 of treatment.
