Description:
Sample sent to PHE Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), Porten Down for Denguevirus antibody testing. Denguevirus antibodies particularly IgM, and nucleic acid detection techniques are useful in the diagnosis of suspected acute symptomatic Dengue infection ( see clinical details ). If clinically indicated a convalescent sample may be diagnostically useful. This assay is available routinely Mon to Fri.
Clinical details:
Denguevirus infection is the commonest insect / arthropod born infection of Humans. It occurs in tropical and sub-tropical regions and is most commonly a self limiting febrile illness commonly presenting with arthralgia and a transient rash and may have a bi-phasic pattern. Mortality is less than 1% overall but severe manifestations can occur including shock and haemorrhage. Patient often have a thrombocytopenia which may be marked and a mild leukopenia and transaminitis. It is important to consider malaria as an alternative diagnosis.

Place labelled sample in a sealed sample bag and send to Central Specimen Reception (CSR). To prevent sample haemolysis please store samples in refrigerator if a delay in sending samples to CSR is unavoidable.
