Infection with Group A beta-haemolytic Streptococcus (GAS) is followed by the production of specific antibodies against streptococcal exoenzymes which can be measured using commercial test systems.
The most important of these are anti-streptolysin O (ASO) and anti-deoxyribonuclease - B (ADB).
Sample is tested by virology staff and clinical advice is provided by microbiology staff.
