Dr Guy OrchardMSc PhD FIBMS CSci

Dr Orchard is responsible for providing and developing the dermatopathology, Moh’s micrographic surgery and trichogram diagnostic services for the Laboratory.

He is actively involved in teaching and training, not only within Viapath and Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Trust, but also as an external lecturer at several Universities throughout the country for students studying for MScs  in Biomedical Science.  

Guy completed his Fellowship to the Institute of Biomedical Science in Cellular Pathology in 1990, having gained the highest pass in the UK across all disciplines and was awarded the RJ Lavington Prize. He completed an MSc with distinction in immunology at Surrey University in 1993 and PhD with the University of Westminster in 2011. He has worked at St. John’s for nearly his entire working career, which now spans over 25 years service, and received chartered scientist recognition in 2005.

Guy has been responsible for expanding and developing the dermatopathology and Mohs laboratory diagnostic services. He has been involved in research and development activities for the department in several areas of pathology involving immunocytochemistry techniques. As a result the Laboratory offers a fully automated immunocytochemistry service with double-labelling and in-situ procedures.

Guy has an active interest in lymphoma and melanoma research and participates in assisting researchers or publishing his own contributions in the field.

He is professionally active and sits on four editorial boards and peer reviews for several other journals, and is an immunocytochemistry UK National External Quality Assurance (UKNEQAS) assessor, lecturer and short course co-ordinator. He has been a council member for the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and is currently a specialist advisor for cellular pathology for the IBMS and deputy chief examiner for cellular pathology. Guy sits on the IBMS/ Royal College of Pathologists conjoint boards for both the Higher Specialist Examination Diploma in Histological dissection and also Immunocytochemistry.

Guy is also leading on the development of a certificate of competence and/or Higher Specialist Examination for Biomedical Scientists for Mohs histological practice.

Guy is also the Chair of the first UK Moh’s Society. Guy is a Director on the Board of the American Society of Mohs Histotechnologist and a specialist member of the American National Society of Histotechnologist and newly appointed editorial board member of their professional Journal of Histotechnology.

He is the Editor of the Oxford Press book entitled Histopathology, which forms part of the series of books entitled Fundamentals in Biomedical Science.

Guy has contributed to chapters on histological investigations on several other publications and journals. Guy regularly teaches on the MSc dermatology course for King’s medical school.

Guy has lectured as an invited guest speaker on national conferences within the UK and also overseas on the subjects of immunocytochemistry and mohs procedures.

Guy has developed and patented a new histological product for use on softening tissue prior to histological sectioning called Cellsoft.
