Filaria Serology

This test is referred to another lab outside our network
This does not affect where samples are sent and where your results are issued.
Description:
Sample sent to Hospital for Tropical Diseases (PHE National Parasitology Reference Lab) referral laboratory for Filaria serology testing using an ELISA. A negative result does not exclude the diagnosis. This test will not detect infection with onchocerciasis which is diagnosed by demonstration of microfilariae in skin snips. A blood film to detect the microfilaria may be required if serology is positive. This needs to be taken at a particular time - please contact the laboratory for further details. This assay is available routinely Mon to Fri.
Clinical details:
Filariasis only occurs in tropical regions. Filaria worms are transmitted by mosquitoes. Acute infection may be sub-clinical, or result in lymphangitis, rash, or eosinophilia. Lymphoedema can occur in patients with a high worm burden, which only occurs in those with a repeated filaria exposure living in an endemic country.
