Corneal Scrape

Description: 
Microbiology will provide an eye kit on request for this test. The eye kit consists of three types of agar plates, one glass microscopy slide and a set of instructions. The eye department must request a porter to pick up the eye kit from CSR. Microbiology will perform microscopy, isolation, identification and susceptibility of any organism likely to be pathogenic. Turn around times: microscopy results will be available within 4 hrs, culture results 5-6 days.

Call in advance: 
Please call Microbiology a minimum of 1 hour in advance on ext 83111 or Bleep out of hours (17.00-9.00) on bleep number 1802 to order the eye kit. The kit will need to be collected from CSR by the requestor.
Turnaround time: 
Microscopy results will be available within 4 hrs, culture results 5-6 days. Significant Gram stain and culture results are telephoned to the ward or clinical team by Microbiology Clinical staff.

Storage and transport: 
Place labelled inoculated plates and slide into a sealed specimen bag and arrange for a porter to transport directly to CSR.
