Tissue Typing (Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics) Laboratory at Harefield Hospital

Laboratory overview

Based at Harefield Hospital in the Heart Science Centre, the tissue typing laboratory provides histocompatibility and immunogenetics (H&I) services primarily for the cardiothoracic programme.

We are a UKAS accredited medical laboratory (No.8632), accredited to ISO15189:2012 for the tests listed in the schedule of accreditation on the UKAS website (https://www.ukas.com/download-schedule/8632/Medical/); as well as being accredited by the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI).  

We are committed to providing a service of the highest quality. All work is carried out within the framework of a documented quality system, according to good laboratory and good manufacturing practice. Techniques and procedures are validated, described in standard operating procedures, and conducted by staff whose proficiency is regularly monitored. The laboratory participates in external quality assurance schemes such as UK NEQAS.

We perform HLA antibody testing, HLA typing and crossmatching for the cardiothoracic transplant programme.
