Steroid Laboratory at King's College Hospital
Laboratory overview
The urinary steroid profiling service is one of four Supraregional Assay and Advisory Service (SAAS) - designated sections within the Department of Clinical Biochemistry and one of only two SAAS services for this application in the UK, both based in London. It uses high resolution gas chromatography – mass spectrometry and is headed by Dr Norman Taylor who is a recognised expert in this specialised field. The laboratory has also recently developed analysis of multiple steroids in single samples of blood and saliva (‘steroid panelling’) by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.
